Melting Memories - Giants of Ice
In 2022, glaciers across the Alps experienced the worst rate of melting since records began, with 6% of Switzerland’s total ice mass being lost in a single year. These slow-moving rivers of ice act as massive reservoirs of water and are an integral part of the Alpine ecosystem. Photographing through my father's binoculars, which once belonged to his mother before him, I began to document this drastic loss of glacial ice in the Bernese Alps, a region which I have been visiting since childhood. This technique serves to connect the perspectives of generations over time, a metaphor for one family bearing witness to the disappearance of these white giants. Without the glaciers’ help in reflecting solar radiation, the effects of climate change in this region could have a far wider impact than at first imagined.
